Hamish wins plate whilst FC Minibinnie stuns Ref's Rovers...

The first trophy of the Last Line Fantasy Football season was won at the weekend. In an extremely close encounter, HM11’s won the Plate Final - defeating Liam’s Goal Gods by a single point. Well done Hamish.

In the Head to Head league Wee162 received a boost when Michael’s FC MiniBinnie won a tense fixture with his dad. This gives his mum Jill Binnie a 3 point advantage over John going into the final five games. Michael (and brother Chris) were able to enjoy the weekend with an unusually subdued father. Refs Rovers wins 4th MOM

The March MotM award was won by Refs Rovers making this the 4^th time John Binnie has won the award. It is also another month in which he has increased his leading gap at the top of the main league. With only two months to go, and Jillian playing Stevie Harrold in the Cup Final later this month and with both John and Jillian topping the Head to Head league, it is looking increasingly likely that prizes could be heading to the Binnie household.

Can anyone stop them?

This week we have the final of the Plate competition. Thankfully a Binnie will not win this one... HM11’s will play Liam’s Goal Gods in the competition for the teams knocked out of the Cup competition in the First Round. This looks likely to be a close contest.

The results from last week saw both leaders, Refs Rovers and Wee162, at the top of the league winning and maintaining a 6 point gap. With such a big gap and only 8 gameweeks to go, it will be very difficult for both to be overcome by their nearest rival, HMs11. It should be a high scoring week this week as there are 15 Premiership games counting towards the scores. The highlight of the fixtures is clearly the Lastline cup as we are now down to the semi final stage. Jillian's, Wee162 will play Gordon's, Inch Utd. The other semi final son David taking on his dad Steven in the all Harrold semi when Harroldston United play AFC Bunter.

Cup Fever Hits the Fantasy League

On Friday night Michael made the semi final draw for the LLGS Fantasy Football cup. The draw will see his Mum take on Gordon Adams in one tie and a Harrold father and son contest in the other semi. These ties will be played on the 20/21st of March. The highlights of the results from the weekend had HM's11 and Liams Goal Gods winning there ties to qualify for the Plate final, which will be played on the 2/3rd of April. The February manager of the month was won by John's, Refs Rovers. This is the third time he has won this award, it is becoming a bit boring and his sons say he is clearly unbearable to live with. Can someone please put Christopher and Michael out of their misery.

Hibees Guaranteed to win the Cup

With the Lastline cup completing the quarter final matches this week, it became obvious that Hibs, or at least a Hibs fan, will win the cup this year. With the managers of all 4 teams qualifying for the semis supporting the Hibees, we will at last see green and white favors adorning the cup. There is also the possibility of a father and son cup final, with dad (Stevie) AFC Bunter and son (David) Harroldson United still in the competition.

Saving a Penalty in top 10 hardest of all sporting feats

Picture the scene, your job is to stop a ball 9 inches in diameter travelling up to 60mph hitting a goal that is 192 square feet...oh, and you have to do it in under 0.26 seconds.

Studies have been conducted to show this is the level of difficulty top goalkeepers face in penalty situations. No wonder USA Today's coverage of the Top 10 most difficult sporting feats included 'saving a penalty' at number 9.

So how to you actually save a penalty?

Ask 10 keepers that question and you may get 10 different answers. So rather than giving a definitive answer (as there really isn't any), here are some pointers to consider -

Younger players strike the ball with less pace and less accuracy. Therefore a younger keeper may benefit by waiting until the ball has been struck and reacting to the ball's flight
Spotting common patterns in the penalty taker's run up may give clues as to the side he is aiming for
Many professional keepers track the penalty taker's history, identifying patterns to use to their advantage (Ben Foster had these recorded onto his iPod during the 08/09 season)

It's important to note, having luck on your side goes a long way, as demonstrated in the video below. Goalkeeper gives away a penalty & receives a red card, only for his outfield team mate to save it!!

Inside the mind of Brad Friedel

"Thinking Outside the Box" by Brad Friedel is an excellent read for any aspiring goalkeeper. It gives great insights from Brad's personal experience, looking at events that shaped his goalkeeping career, as well as giving great nuggets of Gking tips, all from a man who's succeeded at the highest level.

Below is a quote from the book on Brad's look at training -

One day he [Brad's gker coach Tim Harris] gave me something written on a scrap of paper. I still have that scrap of paper today. It introduced me to the concept of goal setting. He said, 'if you want to be a great goalkeeper, you need QUALITY.' I looked down onto the piece of paper and in large black letters Time had written the work 'quality'.

It turned out to be an acronym for all the characteristics that a great goalkeeper should aspire to have. It helped me to break down the art and science for being a goalkeeper, and to set myself demanding targets against each attribute. It went like this
Quickness
Upstanding [timing, not diving too early]
Agility
Loudness
Instinct
Technique
Yell to organise

So we began to work with tremendous focus on all of these things, arranging drills and training regimes to improve on a periodic basis...

Brad goes on to explain the importance of goals. If you don't have a way of measuring your performance, how can you truly know how good you are? Sure people can pay you lip service and say you are a fantastic goalkeeper, but, except for the ego boost, it doesn't fully assist in making you better.

One more thing I'd like to add regarding the attitude of Friedel which I think any young goalkeeper can take away with them right now is his approach to mistakes. During a game, if Brad makes a mistake, he does not dwell on it and gets on with the rest of the match...
HOWEVER
Post match, Brad is analysing what went wrong, and states in his book he will repeat the same incident during training up to 50 times, ensuring he makes the correct decision so it is permanently marked in his psyche. He no longer has to consciously think about it.

50 times sounds a heck of a lot doesn't it? That is why he plays (and get paid!) a heck of a lot. There is no half-hearted approach from Mr Friedel. He makes an excellent role for any player young and old.

Nailbiting End to Manager of the Month

With 3 teams vying for the prestigious award, January's MOM was decided on the last game of the month. Indeed it was not until the bonus points from that game were awarded, we eventually saw a winner. Stevie Harrolds AFC Bunter (244 points) were victorious pipping Johns Refs Rovers (243 points) and Jills Wee162 (241 points). Stevies decision to make Damien Duff his captain proved to be decisive as he gained the bonus to take him to the top this month. Well done Stevie.

Friday January 15th sees the first of many Last Line training sessions for the year 2010.

Our Junior keepers will resume their training programme at the Hearts Academy and we look forward to seeing you after a lengthier than usual (but enforced) Christmas break. The following Friday January 22nd our Senior goalkeepers will also resume training.

All sessions commence at the usual time of 8.30pm at the Hearts Academy.

We trust you all had a restful if snowy Christmas and New Year. We know most of you will not have made a save in earnest for over a month due to the extreme weather conditions we have experienced since mid December so we are fully expecting you all to be "champing at the bit!"

On a week that the weather was the winner with 7 Premiership matches postponed, the points score were very low. More than half of the teams scored 10 or less and there were two matches finishing with a scoreline of 5-4. In winning his match by 1 point, Chris Binnie's Edinburgh City took advantage of this poor week to go to the top of the Head-to-Head league. Manager of the Month for December

Amassing a staggering 344 points Chris Binnie has snatched the MOM award for December away from his brother Michael, his nearest rival. In so doing, he has become only the 2nd goalkeeper to win the coveted award. Chris was in 22nd place in the Overall League after the first month. Since then he has consistently picked up points climbing up the league to a heady 8th place by the end of December. Keeping up this form he looks set to be able to challenge for the No. 1 spot and Manager of the Season.

Training tip for young goalkeepers

As a goalkeeper, some on the most exciting things you will encounter involve top corner dives, reflex saves and sliding in at people's feet.

With that in mind it is important to realise how a single training session impacts on every part of your future as a goalkeeper.

Your qualified coach knows what YOU need to succeed, and strives to deliver that every week/fortnight to you. Remember, he/she can only do so much -

A coach can only show you the door, YOU are the one who must walk through it

You must accept responsibility for where you want to go. Do not expect to sit back and be guided by the hand to the top level. It is about setting your goal and doing everything you can to reach it.

When training, you aren't always going to get what you want. There are times you will perform poorly, repeat exercises you may find boring and not get access to goals/equipment that you prefer.

Remember, it is YOU who decides if the session was worthwhile or not. If it didn't go the way you wanted it to, that is still an opportunity to learn, not complain.

If you take every training session with a positive attitude and commit 100%, you will always be walking away with a notch added on your belt, no matter how it went on the surface.

Last Liners face touring Aussies in Glasgow...

In the last fortnight two graduates of the Last Line Goalkeeping School have been donning National Squad colours when they were selected to represent their country against touring sides from Australia.

At U17 level, Stuart Dodds played for the National Squad against adult side Melbourne Allstars in an interesting fixture at the National Football Centre at Toryglen, just across the road from Hampden. The Aussies ran out 2-1 winners in this fixture however the age difference was significant in this outcome.

Elsewhere at U16 level, Chris Binnie pulled on the No1 shirt for the National Squad against the touring Australian U16s and kept a clean sheet in a comfortable 5-0 win for the Scots. Chris is pictured above just before the match which also took place at Toryglen.

Everyone at Last Line would like to congratulate both Stuart and Chris on their continued success at National level. Well done both keepers!

Fantasy Football Shocks!!!!

The results for the 2nd round of the cup brought shock outcomes with four of our coaches being unceremoniously dumped out of the competition. Refs Rovers, Taebash Thistle, Brian Munich and Gingers United all failed to progress to the quarter finals. Rumour has it that John and Brian are in tears! Meanwhile Andy and Stuart have asked for a recount. A Stewards Enquiry will occur over the next few days.
In the Head to Head league, Taebash Thistle maintained his 100% record with Refs Rovers beating Brian Munich in the coaches’ match. This week also saw the Fourth Manager of the Month announced. Thank goodness, the winner is finally one of the keepers. Thomas McLean’s team (The McLeans) amassed a massive 79 points this weekend, with a monthly total of 220. Congratulations Thomas a prize will be winging its way to you.

Here we bring a photo from this weekend's Inter Regional Cup competition, where Chris Binnie represented the SERYFA at U16 level.

Chris played against North Region in a comfortable 6-1 win for our local boys. In addition to this representation at U16 level, Last Line also has goalkeepers in both the U15 and U17 squads respectively - with Connor Lunn selected for the 15s and former Last Liner Stuart Dodds playing in the 17s.

Both Chris and Stuart have reached the final selection process for the National squads later this month and we have our fingers crossed that both keepers are selected once more, having both played for their respective National sides last season. Good luck lads!

This is now getting a little embarrassing and - it has to be said - tedious. The Manager of the Month Award for November has been decided this weekend and (yet again) the winner is a Last Line Coach. Since the season started in August no keeper or parent has managed to seize the monthly prize from the clutches of the coaching staff. (Edit: from the clutches of John and Andy. Clearly Brian isn't going to manage this feat *cough* )

The Manager of the Month for October is once again John, who also appears to be running away with the main league competition.

Details of the head-to-head league results will be published later this week, as the actual official game week closes after West Ham play Aston Villa in a midweek fixture.

In the meantime, here is a photograph to prove that he isn't just a successful Fantasy Football manager but he actually is rather good at the real thing too - as John and his St Thomas of Aquins 1996 squad show off the Edinburgh Secondary Schools Championship Trophy...and, yes, he went through last season with these boys unbeaten too. It's also a nice opportunity to catch three Last Line keepers in one photograph - as Liam, Michael and Rian are all in the League Winning side of 2009.

Well done to all the first round winners and commiserations to our losing sides - who now all progress into the LLGS Plate competition.

There were some fascinating and very close ties this weekend and there will be some disappointed teams who find themselves in the Plate having had excellent scoring weeks because their opponents somehow scored even more. Edinburgh City and FC Minibinnie are two such sides, who would have beaten most teams left in the main cup competition...hard luck folks!

Last Line coaching conveyor belt rolls on...

Last Line has a tradition of developing young goalkeeping talent - encouraging budding young shot stoppers, no matter their age or stage, to become as good a keeper as they can. However, the playing side of matters is not the only stage we are keen to help our promising proteges flourish on...
Brian, Andy and Stuart are all classic examples of talented Last Line goalkeepers who have made the decision to develop their own talents in more than one direction by making the move into coaching as well as playing. From as early a stage as is technically and legally possible, all three of these LLGS keepers turned coaches have undertaken their official SFA "badges" in goalkeeping and have become invaluable assets to the goalkeeping school. They are all Last Line Graduates who are now giving something back to their successors...and the school itself is all the better for this.

However, it has come to our attention this week that yet another talented Last Liner is making their way into the coaching world. Chris Binnie, who has now been with Last Line longer than any other current keeper, has been working for the SFA all week helping them with delivering their ever popular Ocotber Half Term courses.

Local SFA Development Officer, David Sheldon, was delighted to welcome Chris on board for the occasion and Chris himself reports that he has very much enjoyed himself taking daily goalkeeping sessions for young keepers. Chris will be taking his SFA coaching certificates this season also and we look forward to seeing more of Chris the Coach, as well as Chris the Goalie, at Last Line in the coming years...

Fantasy Football League

With the LLGS Fantasy Football League well under way we felt it was a good idea to try and maintain interest for all teams participating - right through to the end of the season. Therefore, we are going to expand the number of competitions for everyone to take part in. As mentioned, we will be giving awards for each Manager of the Month, with John and Andy already picking up the first two prizes respectively. We will also award a prize to the Manager of the Season, ie the person who gains the most points over the full season.

Furthermore, we will be running the Fantasy Football Cup competition which we have previously mentioned, a Plate competition (for those going out of the main Cup competition at an early stage) and a Head-to-Head League - which will all kick off on Premier League Game Week 10.

Good news for Last Line Goalkeeping School this October, as the SERYFA announce their Under 16 and Under 15 squads for the coming season. Last season Chris Binnie represented the Region as the first choice goalkeeper in the U15 Regional Squad and this season he is being succeeded by fellow Last Liner, Connor Lunn. Chris himself has been reselected for the Regional Squad at U16 level and is through to the final trial for the SYFA Under 16 National Squad, having been part of last season's U15 SYFA National Squad.

Last Line would like to congratulate both boys on their continued success and recognition at Regional level and wish them both every good wishes for the coming season. We will have our collective goalkeeping gloved fingers crossed for our talented keepers when the National Squads are announced next month.

Hat trick of Football Manager appearances for Last Liner?

Bringing his appearances in this well known computer game to three seasons in a row, East Fife stopper Andy Stobie will be asking Santa for the new edition for Christmas.

Fantasy Football Cup competition reminder

Last Line Goalkeeping School would like to remind all of our keepers and parents about this week's upcoming Fantasy Football Cup. The draw was made a couple of weeks ago and can be found elsewhere on this blog. Head to head competitions between individual teams will be undertaken using the points total each side amasses over next weekend's Premiership card.

In each tie, the side who gains the most points next weekend will progress to the second round of the cup.

For further information about how your team is doing, how to make transfers and how each player gains points, please go the Official Barclay's Premier League website and log in using your own unique username and password.

The Manager of the Month September 2009...

Hard on the heels of last month's Last Line coaches' success, when John won the inaugural Last Line Goalkeeping School Fantasy Football Manager of the Month, we are pleased to announce that the winner for September 2009 is none other than Andrew Stobie. Yes, that's another Last Line coach (though we might want to count him as a keeper...sort of...seeing as he is a graduate of Last Line and pictured here in his day job as shot stopper for East Fife FC).

Andy snatched the award on the final evening of the month, courtesy of a Monday night game between Manchester City and West Ham. Up until that point we thought we were going to have our first parent winner, with Jill Binnie looking a good bet for the award. It was not to be and we send our congratulations to Andy.

If any of the keepers fancy breaking this coaching monopoly of the Fantasy Football League then they are going to have to up their game. The most likely candidate at the moment would appear to be Michael Binnie (what is it they put in the porridge in the Binnie Household?)

More Last Liner Success!

Hard on the heels of Jamie Sneddon's trophy win in Ireland with Hearts 1997 squad, we have further news of Last Line goalkeeper success in the Emerald Isle. Last month, Chris Binnie went to Galway with Aberdeen's 1994 squad to take part in an international tournament including sides from Leicester City, Fulham, Ipswich Town, Sunderland and the Republic of Ireland's own national squad. There was also competition from sides who had travelled from as far afield as Norway and Mexico.

The side representing the Pittodrie club were to have a successful tournament and reached the final day of the competition with a Cup Final against Republic of Ireland (1994 squad) to look forward to. Chris played the whole of the Final, keeping a clean sheet and making a handful of important and impressive saves to give Aberdeen the opportunity to press home a one goal advantage, winning the trophy courtesy of a hard fought 1-0 Final win.

Last Line Keeper Success!

Well done to LL keeper Jamie Sneddon for his efforts in helping Hearts U12 win the Foyle Cup in Ireland this year.

It couldn't have gone much better for Jamie as he performed breathtaking heroics during the quarter final and the semi final which both went to penalties. Jamie saved four penalties over the course of both shoot-outs ensuring their progress to the final where they beat a strong Wolves side 4-1

The Foyle Cup attracts a attention from a host of scouts, including some of the top Premiership teams.

Summer Academy - Day 5 Review

The final day of the Summer Academy started with the keepers working on a review of the various topics they had covered throughout the week. Each coach had selected their own batch of drills and coaching points they wished to cover in this first hour and each keeper is sure to have honed their skills for the start of the new season!

Coaches Challenge Score -
Keepers 3 - Coaches 2

Somehow the impossible became possible on the last day of the coaches challenge. Crowds has gathered to see final day of the much heated coaches challenge 2009. Due to a technicality, the coaches made the choice of which challenge was to be the decider. Naturally they opted for what they felt is their strongest...the 2 minute challenge.

First to defend the goal were the coaches, making several excellent saves. Lapses in concentration began to show through as a quick 2 extra goals were scored right at the blow of the whistle. Keepers score = 5

After the rotation, the keepers needed to keep the score below 5 in order to win. With the crowd fully behind the keepers, it spurred them on to make some breathtaking saves. In the dying seconds, coaches were on 4, and needed just one more goal to level it. Shot after shot was saved by the keepers, resulting in a full time score of keepers 5 - coaches 4

A post match interview with the coaches spokesperson indicates shock of the defeat -

From day 1 the coaches felt they were the stronger team. This loss is certainly hit them hard, and may result in some of them considering their options for the future.

Summer Academy - Day 4 Review

Thursday saw the keepers working on the final 2 coaching topics of the week, distribution (from hands & feet) and reaction saves. As young goalkeepers progress onto playing full 11 a side, mastering distribution is a key skill. A goalkeeper who is comfortable with the ball at his/her feet is a big asset to any squad. Not only is a goalkeeper the last line of defence, he/she is the first line of attack.

Today the coaches showed exactly why they have been favourites since Day 1. Sublime finishing & world class saves made light work of a surprisingly lackluster keepers side. That result means we go into tomorrow with it all square. 1 more challenge, the decider, taking place on the last day of the camp.

The Last Line goalkeeper coaching week reached its halfway point today on a very sunny Wednesday afternoon.

Topics of the day included; dealing with crossed balls & 1v1 situations. It is important to remember that a goalkeeper is very rarely going to face the exact same situation twice. The ball is going to be flighted in at a slightly different angle when it is crossed, each attacker will react differently in a breakaway situation. It is up to the individual goalkeeper to practice building upon the proper technique taught by the coaches and apply it in his/her live games.

As the saying goes - Practice makes permanent, so ensure your training incorporates the correct technique as this will stop bad habits forming.

Statisticly it SHOULDN'T of happened. The odds were heavily stacked in the coaches favour; age, experience, adaptabiliy, agility, intellegence & good looks...

The keepers went first. They managed to score a total of 2 points. This underwelming amount seemed too good to be true for the coaches as they stepped up. Maybe it was a change in the wind direction, or some unknown outside influence, but the coaches scored only 1 point.

This means the keepers take the lead for a second time. The confidence of the coaches has certainly taken a knock, and outside sources claim they were spotted perfecting their strikes till 9pm tonight in anticipation for tomorrow's challenge. Watch this space!

Summer Academy - Day 2 Review

The sun was shining for the second day of Last Line's Summer Academy 2009.

Today's topics included; speed, agility & quickness, along with diving saves (always a favourite).

Important lessons are to be taken away from today's session, most notably the benefits of keepers being quick on their feet. Watch a professional goalkeeper's daily training regime and you will be sure to see him/her constantly working on quick movement around the goal.

After yesterday's upset, it was business as usual for the coaches in what was a comfortable victory in the event, 6 shot challenge. Reports from the sidelines suggests there is a 'nervous tension' in the keeper's camp. The coaches will be looking to use this to their advantage going into tomorrow's challenge, the LEGENDARY 'Path to Peffermill'.

Summer Academy - Day 1 Review

Monday the 3rd of August kicked off the first day of our Summer Academy 2009.

31 goalkeepers were in attendance at the fantastic Peffermill Playing Field facilities.

The day started with a very entertaining group warm-up lead by Last Line's very own 'entertainment warm-up expert', Coach John. Shortly after the groups split and were coached on handling and positioning around goal. These topics were worked on for the majority of the day, which allowed keepers the opportunity to hone there skills around penalty box.

Coaches Challenge Result -
Keepers 1 - Coaches 0

The first coaches challenge resulted in a SHOCK DEFEAT for the coaches in Monday's event - Crossbar Challenge. SuperKeeper of the Day, Robbie D, managed to strike the crossbar, giving the keepers 2 bonus points. Even heroics from Coach Brian (AKA 'The Crossbar King') weren't enough to equal the match, resulting in a narrow win for the keepers! It goes without saying, today's result will only INCREASE the coaches' hunger to be overall Coaches Challenge winners for the week!

Hibernian Course 2009 Success!

For the 3rd consecutive year, we teamed up with Hibernian FC to deliver a week of goalkeeping training for budding young goalkeepers looking to improve their skills.

This year, we were part of the Hibs Greenshoots Pre-Season Training Programme, which took place at the state-of-the-art Hibs Training Centre at East Mains.

The goalkeepers had an exciting week, which was topped off by a visit from first team goalkeeper Yves Makalambay & first team goalkeeping coach Scott Thomson!

A big thanks to all the boys for their effort over the week.

SYFA recognition for Last Line keepers

We would like to congratulate our three National Squad keepers - Liam Hope (Under 17s), Stuart Dodds (U16s) and Chris Binnie (U15s) - in achieving this ultimate recognition.

We are absolutely delighted for all three keepers, who thoroughly deserve their selection - well done lads!

Presentation Evening Review

On Friday May 22nd, Last Line Goalkeeping School celebrated the end of another highly successful season with its annual Presentation Evening. Attended by 42 budding goalkeepers and their families, the event proved to be as popular as ever with the enthusiastic young people who have worked so hard throughout the 2008-09 season with us.

Guest of Honour for the awards night was Hibernian legend, Pat Stanton, who happily handed out participation medals, trophies and certificates to all 42 boys present - gladly posing for commemorative photographs with each and every one. Last Line are grateful for the photographic services of Lee Laird, who has processed fabulous professional complimentary prints for each of our keepers.

The coaches found this the hardest season ever in terms of selecting winners in each of our main categories. Such is the standard of goalkeeper at the school, it was an almost impossible task. Last Line currently has National Squad goalkeepers at Under 15, Under 16 and Under 17 level. A significant clutch of our keepers are with senior clubs such as Hearts, Dunfermline and Aberdeen. We also have the pleasure of working with the SE Scotland Regional Squad goalkeepers at Under 14, Under 15, Under 16 and Under 17 level. All this before we even begin to consider a wide range of talented shot stoppers playing with boys clubs across the SERYFA...

Awards, as ever, are presented to those keepers who have demonstrated the attitude that underpins all that Last Line strives for. We have four age groups: Seniors, Juniors, Kids Gloves, First Gloves. These are broadly determined by age but also allow for differentiation based on individual ability and progress. Each age group has three awards : Goalkeeper of the Year, Technical Merit Award and Most Improved Goalkeeper. Careful consideration is given to the merits of all our boys and the winner of the first two awards, without question, are expected to demonstrate both excellent technical ability and unstinting attitude. The winners of the Most Improved Award can be of a wide range of abilities but must have made significant progress in their development across the season.

Presentation Evening Success

On the 22nd of May 2009, our LL Goalkeepers were treated to a fantastic presentation evening as a reward for their hard work and commitment to the season-long training course.

With photos and video clips from throughout the season, along with special guest Pat Stanton in attendance, it was a memorable night for all.

With our Goalkeeping School finished for another season, it seems like the right time to give the Last Line website a long overdue update!

I must confess, the main website found itself getting only 3 to 4 updates per season (shocking!). The new blog will be updated a MINIMUM of once a week. So rest assured you will be returning to find new content time after time.
